Victor Gsovsky (Russian: Виктор Иванович Гзовский; January 12, 1902, Saint Petersburg - March 14, 1974, Hamburg) was a ballet dancer and choreographer.
Victor Gsovsky was born in Petersburg, the Russian empire.
His teacher on ballet was a Mariinsky Theatre’s prima ballerina Evgenia Sokolova.[1][2][3][4]
In 1925 Victor Gsovsky and his wife the ballerina Tatjana Gsovsky have left the Soviet Russia and have arrived to Berlin, Germany.[3][5] In 1925–1928 Victor Gsovsky worked as the dancer and the choreographer at Berlin State Opera.
In 1928 Victor and Tatjana Gsovsky organized own ballet school and troupe Ballet Gsovsky.[1][4] They went on tour in the countries of Europe. In 1937, when fascists have come to Germany to the power, they have left to Paris, France.[3] But war came to France too. In Paris they opened ballet school and continued their career as choreographers. After the termination of the Second World War V.Gsovsky worked in Markova-Dolin Company (Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin),[3] in the Paris Opera, in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
In 1950 Victor and Tatjana Gsovsky returned to Germany.[4] In 1950 to 1952 he was a ballet director of the Munich State Opera.[3]
Victor Gsovsky continued work as the choreographer at different musical theaters of Germany: in Düsseldorf, in Munich (theater Prinzregententheater), in Hamburg (Hamburg State Opera).[3]
Victor Gsovsky has died in Hamburg on March 14, 1974.
Among his pupils: Yvette Chauviré, Nina Vyroubova, Colette Marchand, Violette Verdy, Vera Zorina, Falco Kapuste etc.
